Showing Today | Imitation of Christ

Tara Subkoff is an American actress, fashion designer, and a 21st century style icon. Tara has acted in over 27 films, including The Cell, As Good As It Gets, Freeway, The Notorious Bettie Page, and more.

Tara began Imitation of Christ in 2001 as an art project that became an overnight international fashion sensation. Actress Chloe Sevigny appeared in the first show when each piece was sewn by hand and recycled from vintage, thrift and goodwill shops. Tara created true pieces of art with her fashion shows which garnered her a cult following.

As a result of all of that success, in 2006, Tara licensed her name for the first time in collaboration with footwear label EasySpirit, denim label Blue Concepts and jewelry label Erickson Beamon. Most recently, Tara has done four capsule collections for Bebe under the “Tara Subkoff for Bebe” name, which sold out of all 300 stores and online outlets within the first five days of the collection hitting the floor.

In the Spring/Summer 2006 NYC fashion show, starring Scarlett Johansson, Tara showed four collections: Imitation Jeans, Tara Subkoff for Easy Spirit, Imitation of Christ, and Imitation of Christ Couture. That same season, Tara showed an exclusive collection at Barneys, which incorporated the famous Barneys windows and featured the cast of Saturday Night Live. Always in attendance at most shows, is the loyal celebrity following that Imitation of Christ has developed over the years. Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Owen Wilson, Anjelica Huston, Rufus Wainwright, Helena Christianson, and Chloe Sevigny are just a few of the faces in attendance at Tara’s fashion presentations.

The Imitation of Christ Shows were the most talked about show during each NYC Fashion Week, due to innovative themes and adventurous tactics like having models in a pool or riding in on horses, or most notably having editors walk the runway while models were seated and took notes.

Internationally, Tara has shown twice at the Paris Couture Shows and she curated a seven day fashion installation at the Carlton Festival of the Arts in Sao Paulo, Brazil. She has also showed Imitation Couture in Hydra, Greece, starring Chloe Sevigny.

Tara recently brought back Imitation of Christ in its most basic incarnation: easy-to-wear staples with an edge. Tara continues her no-sweatshop policy and maintains her use of organic fabrics. This lower price point line is shortened to just “Imitation” and is inspired by Coco Chanel and her use of jersey.
