The Bensoni line, started in 2007 by Sonia Yoon and Benjamin Channing Clyburn, is a distinct yet cohesive amalgamation of the designers’ visions. The collection is a unique marriage of young street culture and classic American fashion, a juxtaposition of feminine versus masculine as East meets West.
Born in Seoul, raised in London, and educated at Parsons School of Design in NYC, Sonia’s diverse upbringing transpires through her cosmopolitan style. Growing up in the early 90s, London fascinated her as she wandered the streets of Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden amongst a sea of mohawked punks in leather jackets and Dr Marten boots. The dichotomy of street culture and her life at an all-female private school in proper uniform provoked her imagination in style and fashion. Asian and feminine details such as origami, ruffles, pleating, and intricate draping echo throughout her designs and are juxtaposed with references to young street culture.
Benjamin’s traditional American upbringing in Baltimore, Maryland, is reflected in his classic American style. Although Benjamin’s first career of choice was architecture, he found himself drawn to fashion when he moved to NYC to attend Parsons. His love for clean classic lines inspired Benjamin to partake in internships at Giorgio Armani, The Gap, and Brioni. His distinct background in menswear and architecture shines through his designs as he uses geometry and graphic shapes in tailored silhouettes.
The Bensoni girl is effortless in her style and utterly imaginative when it comes to fashion—she breaks rules by linking elements of classic and street culture in an elegant manner.
