Moving The Still Submissions
We are proud to present Moving the Still: A Festival of GIFS, the first ever large-scale open call and exhibition curated by Paddle8, a premier online destination for art collectors, and powered by Tumblr, the world’s leading social blogging platform, showcasing GIFS as a new art form in both digital and real space.
While the GIF file format is twenty-five years old this year, it has recently gained considerable traction in the digital sphere as well as within the practices of established artists. To celebrate this incredibly diverse and dynamic medium, Paddle8 and Tumblr will host an online call for submissions from Tumblr’s vast, international blogger community — culminating in a physical exhibition of selected GIFS on view during Art Basel Miami Beach in December. The online open call submission via Tumblr will launch October 17 and remain live through November 7.
Paddle8 and chief Selection Council member Johnny Misheff have together invited several prominent figures from various creative industries — including Michael Stipe, the Rodarte sisters, Ryan Trecartin, RoseLee Goldberg, Nicola Formichetti, Richard Phillips, James Frey and Vinoodh Matadin & Inez van Lamsweerd – to be part of a Selection Council overseeing the open call submissions via Tumblr. Each member will choose 25 GIFs in their individual category to be exhibited in Miami. Paddle8 and Johnny Misheff will also be integral to the selection process.
Also on October 17, Paddle8.com will release an editorial project featuring a curated selection of GIFS created by Selection Council members and invited artists including Nick Knight, Adam Dugas, Casey Spooner, Spencer Sweeney, Jim Drain and Nicolas Fernandez, among many others, as well as contextual materials on the history of the GIF.
Individuals whose GIFs are selected for exhibition in Miami will be announced on November 26. The exhibition, to be mounted in the Wynwood District of Miami during Art Basel Miami Beach, will be the first iteration of a new arts and culture initiative concepted by Smartwater®, Milk and MADE.
