Anndra Neen | A Family Affair
The spirit of heritage and collaboration infused the Milk Gallery last night with the opening of Anndra Neen’s show.
The jewelry designers (sisters Phoebe and Annette Stephens) carefully curated their work to compare with the paintings and assemblages of their kin. The subject matter of these artworks clearly had strong influence on the Stephens girls.
While their Mexico upbringing is a known source of material for this duo, these familial paintings bring a new objectivity to their creative sources. Dark, ceremonial images gave a new, Day of The Dead style, translating to the thick metal cuffs, caged for presentation.
These sumptuous appendages are clearly rooted deeply in the past, giving the collection the feeling that what we see is something of an ancient relic.
