Swooned and Crooned by Tom Odell
The McKittrick Hotel, home to the innovative performance Sleep No More, played host to an intimate and very exclusive musical Fashion Week event for Burberry. After infinitely stylish guests hobnobbed amongst the warm glow of the rooftop bar, 22-year-old singer / songwriter Tom Odell performed a rousing and soulful performance backed by a backing band of brass, vocalists and acoustics.
Odell’s story is almost that of a fairy tale for any artist. Dragging his keyboard to open mics where he experienced the high, lows, small victories and humiliating lows of such a life, he was eventually discovered and signed by In The Name Of, an imprint of Columbia Records headed by Lily Allen, earning a nomination for the BBC’s Sound of 2013. Gaining the attention of Burberry Creative Director Christopher Bailey, Odell was selected to give a grand performance of his song Hold Me on the runway for Burberry Prorsum Autumn/Winter 2013 show held in Hyde Park London, providing one of those fashion week events talked about long after the festival’s completion.
Flanked by rich red David Lynch-esque curtains, his performance in the packed downstairs bar at the McKittrick was emotional, recalling the haunting range of Jeff Buckley, was received rapturously by a dedicated fan base squeezed at the lip of the stage amongst the invited fashion crowd.
