Photo Story: Dusan Reljin, 'BOOM 1'
In 2010, fashion photographer Dusan Reljin was on an assignment that took him back to his home city of Belgrade. While there, he photographed several buildings that were destroyed in 1999, when NATO attacked Yugoslav forces during the Kosovo War. Reljin later spliced these photos with images of models taken from his different fashion shoots to represent the collision between the two very different worlds. We asked him about the ideas behind the image he calls "BOOM 1."
The image of Natalia Vodianova is from my very first story for W magazine. It was also the first image used to create these collages and set the tone for the rest of the images throughout this series. Everything from the colors to the proportions is based on this image. The background is a residential area that was accidentally bombed by NATO. Being inside these buildings was horrible. The smell was disturbing. It was visually depressing. Being in these buildings, looking at the remnants, I understood how time had just stopped.
