Red Bull's SunnySide Up CANYAVAL
Last night, we had a decidedly Caribbean vibe in the Milk Studios penthouse thanks to Red Bull’s SunnySide Up, Anya Ayoung Chee, Serge Becker, and Miss Lily’s.
Project Runway winner, Anya Ayoung Chee showcased her cANYAval line. Renowned hip-hop photographer, Jonathan Mannion shot a look-book in the midst of a full-on reggae party. Doors opened at 3PM and guests were greeted by cANYAval models who were decked out in feathers, bikinis and twerked inside and onto the roof-deck.
Models wore necklaces designed by Reshma B Chains that read, Boss Bitch, Queen, Tuneup, WahGwan, & cANYAval. In addition to modeling for cANYAval’s look-book, they all served cocktails, danced with men wearing stilts, all while instagraming photos of the event.
Inside was quite a scene, Mannion was shooting, while a bar full of World Cup fans went crazy for France VS Honduras. Outside, DJ Jillionaire played Serani, Beenie Man, & others great beats. Guests were able to enjoy Miss Lily’s Caribbean flavorful quinoa, mini sandwiches with Jamaica flags and watermelon salad mixed with tomatoes & cheese.
When the party couldn’t get any better, DJ Kes performed, then we had a chance to catch up with Anya & find out more about her clothing line. “cANYAval is a conversion of carnival in Trinidad and my brand. Bringing everything that is authentic where I’m from- cANYAval also curates smaller brands from Trinidad. Its the vibe of today, easy and organic.” Taking the advice from mentor & Project Runway Judge, Nina Garcia, Anya stayed true to her Caribbean voice, one of the factors that has brought her success.
Once the party began to wind down we tracked down creative engineer Serge Becker, the mastermind behind Miss Lily’s, whose empire also includes La Esquina, Cafe Habana, La Bodega Negra and other iconic spots. He’s been friends with Anya for a couple of years and has been excited to display her work in the most natural way. “We’ve been talking about showcasing her work and I thought the best way is showing the context where it comes from & what really inspires her. Out of coincidence, Red Bull contacted me about putting together rooftop BBQ’s and thought this would be perfect. The rest was history.”
There was even mention that Miss Lilly’s could be going overseas! Watch out Europe reggae culture is coming for you!
