The other ‘Saint Laurent’ Biopic
In January a film called Yves Saint Laurent starring Pierre Niney as the French designer came out at the Berlin International Film Festival. In September a film called Saint Laurent starring Gaspard Ulliel as the French designer came out at Cannes Film Festival. Confusing right? We’re still trying to wrap our heads around the insanity that two biopics of the iconic designer came out in the same year, so here are the differences (as far as we can tell)
•Obviously, different actors and directors.
•Different festival debut.
•The lack of “Yves” in the title of the Bertrand Bonello version.
•And more importantly, the Bonello version is unapproved.
This isn’t as dramatic as it sounds, but it could make a huge difference in content, since the Bonello version, which also stars babes of babes Léa Seydoux (as Loulou de la Falaise) and Louis Garrel (as Jacques de Bascher), hasn’t gotten the approval by Saint Laurent’s lifelong partner Pierre Bergé. There’s some speculation that Bergé didn’t approve because Saint Laurent doesn’t beat around the designer’s tumultuous drug addiction and alcoholism bush, but we’ll have to see how dark it actually is when it comes out stateside in September 24th. The trailer – which has just been released – looks good though, the cinematography is great, the music is great, and come on, let’s be honest…no harm can come from watching an interesting story being told by such pretty faces.
