Milk Made goes to FYF Fest: Day 2
In its tenth year and with arguably one of the best lineups of the summer, FYF Fest was highly anticipated—and then a huge letdown for many attendees. A new venue and an increased amount of attendees seemed to cause major issues the first day; lines that stretched on for hours, capacity issues which led to people missing their favorite artists, a confusing layout, and employees who didn’t seem to have any idea about what was going on around them led to many frustrated festivalgoers. The issues from the first day were addressed after complaints hit social media outlets and Sunday ran more smoothly.
All in all, FYF’s saving grace was the Arena. Reminiscent of Coachella’s Yuma tent (pitch black with tons of disco balls), but decked out with even crazier lighting, you were immediately transported into another place (and planet) upon entry. And with Kelela, Chet Faker, Todd Terje, DJ Harvey, Daphni, Daniel Avery, DARKSIDE, and Jamie XX on the bill—there was very little reason to ever leave to see the light of day. DARKSIDE delivered the most mind-blowing performance of the weekend with their minimalistic usage of colors, insanely cinematic tunes, live instrumentation/vocals, orgasmic builds, and body quaking bass. At one moment during their performance, I closed my eyes, and just when I thought life could not get any better, I opened my eyes, and someone near me shot a stream of glorious bubbles into the air that drifted by me. Everything was perfection.
Taking a mandatory break from dancing, I eventually ventured out to get some food and caught HAIM on the main stage. Those sisters have the amazing ability of really making every performance, no matter how large of a venue or crowd, feel like they’ve invited you to hang out with them in their living room. Super talented and fun, they were the perfect act to watch as I scarfed down my coveted açai bowl (an amazing festival find), which I singlehandedly give credit to for curing me of the cold I was fighting all weekend.
So to FYF, you definitely got three things right this year: a stellar line up, a cool indoor venue option, and variety of delicious and life saving food and drink.
