Backstage Banter With Cushnie et Ochs

The Cushnie et Ochs SS15 show began much like the typical rave, as a series of strobe lights hummed to life and a bass throbbed so hard that our brains immediately turned to soup—so we knew we were in for a treat. We were hit first by a battalion of models draped in a lush peach color, and we hit rapidfire by their navy, pink, and black and white striped comrades. Cushnie and Ochs have shared that the inspiration behind this collection was the always in-style Cleopatra, which rang true in the goddess-like, silken dresses and thick gold arm bands adorning the models. We thought the mighty Aphrodites could also pass for backup dancers on a Sade tour, but the effortlessly timeless looks would be in style any time, any place. The only question that remains is where we can get more.

Milk Made:I heard you guys talking about your inspiration a lot, so I’m not going to ask you that right now.

Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs: (laugh)

MM: What is it like to have two talents behind designing as opposed to one?

CC: I think you become much more sure of yourself when there’s two of you, ‘cause you can just back-and-forth. I feel like you probably question yourself a lot more if you’re by yourself trying to figure out if that’s what it’s supposed to look like, if that’s the direction you want to go in.

MO: It’s a sounding board.

CC: Yeah, we have a constant dialogue. It gives you confidence, you’re like, “Ok, yeah, we both love this.”

MO: We both agree. (laugh)

MM:What does the Cushnie et Ochs woman represent for you guys?

CC: She’s super strong, you know she definitely likes to look a certain way…

MO: Really put-together. Refined.

CC: Sleek, sexy.

MM:If you could dress any person, alive or dead, who would it be?

CC & MO: (laugh, then at the same time) Cleopatra!

MO: Come back! I got trousers for you girl! (laughs)

MM:And where do you envision the perfect place to wear this collection?

MO: Somewhere hot.

(In the background someone whispers, “The pyramids.”)

CC & MO: The pyramids? (laugh)

MO: On a camel going to the pyramids!
