3 Face & Body Treatments You Never Knew You Needed
Long gone are the days of secrecy around facial and body procedures or injectables. Botox is just as common as a good morning mimosa at brunch. Everyone is free to do what works for them. But what if you’re like me and feel like the needle just isn’t for you?
The shock and awe of injecting one’s face with Botox or fillers to maintain the ever-so-desired eternal youth is old news. While some find these forms of preventative treatments a standby, I would like to maintain and rejuvenate externally while receiving the same benefits.
If you know me, you know that when it comes to the skin, I will always be a proponent of finding the products that work the best for you. I’d say the key to keeping skin youthful is a good skincare regime and drinking tons of water, but, there is another part: maintenance. I have tried my fair share of treatments (some better than others) and think I have come across a few diamonds in the rough.
Sofie Pavitt’s charming studio is the perfect place to start. I visited the minimalist studio for their Deep Clean Facial and let me tell you, I was not disappointed. To start, Cali, my esthetician, looked at my skin through a woods lamp, which is a device that gives the esthetician to ability to look past the surface of the skin to determine my exact skin type so they can customize my facial based on the results. This is the first time I have ever heard of a woods lamp and was immediately struck with the realization of the amount of the estheticians that I went to who never took this step prior to beginning my facials. My skin was cleansed and a desincrustation solution was applied while steaming to help melt away the sebaceous oils and clear out my clogged pores. Next is where things got exciting, if you know me, I love technology so if you combine beauty and tech, I am hooked! They use a suction tool that sucks out all the topical crud that is clogging your pores, then prior to extractions, they use a device that uses ultrasound and microcurrent for exfoliation. When I left that appointment my skin had never felt cleaner.
If you are looking for something that will stop aging in its tracks, micro-needling is your go-to treatment. For those who have not tried it before, it’s definitely not for the faint of heart but it is worth it.This is one of my favorite anti-aging remedies. I usually get the treatment every six or so weeks. It also helps with keeping acne at bay. As the facial starts, your skin is cleaned and a topical numbing solution is applied. Once the numbing has set a serum is applied and so begins the magic! A pen with multiple tiny needles glides across your skin, the tiny needles stamp the skin quickly, feeling slightly like a pin prick. This tricks the skin into thinking its being injured so collagen rushes to the surface of the skin creating a plump, youthful affect. Sacred Skincare has one of the best micro-needling treatments I have had in a long time. Their experienced team of estheticians customize the treatment your skin type and skin concerns. Plus, if the pain is your worry, they can go easy on you the first time around!
Lastly, my facial skin is something that is always top of mind but I am always working on keeping my body and mind in tip top shape as well. I had heard through the grapevine of Gotham Wellness and their bespoke Cosmetic Acupuncture treatments for a while. I knew that this was something I needed to try, as I have only experienced acupuncture once on my lower back from years of past gymnastics trauma.
Walking into Gotham Wellness you are greeted by Stefanie DiLibero who is the owner and expert in Chinese medicine. She makes you feel right at home with a very serene atmosphere in her SoHo studio. Once you are changed, she sits down and asks you about you. She asked me about my skin concerns, body concerns and anything else I am dealing with, like stress, anxiety or all the above as a NYer. From there, she created a custom treatment that will slowly but surely (with a few treatments) work out all the bad stuff and keep the good in. This is an acupuncture treatment that is full body, from your toes all the way up to your face. Once all the needles have been placed, she uses facial cupping tools, LED light and microcurrents to amp it up a notch and create radiant internal health. The treatment lasted 90 minutes and to say that pure sadness ran through me when I was woken up at its end is to the say the least. This is a specialty treatment that I can see myself gifting myself a few times a year to maintain a steady and happy balance.
No matter where you are in your anti-aging journey, know that not all treatments work the same on everyone. I encourage you to test and try all the options that are out there to find out what fits you best.
