Shaun White takes Air + Style to Cali

Thinking about California elicits imagery of surfing, The Beach Boys, East coast skating, Hollywood, and…snowboarding? In a press conference today sports superstar/rock star/occasional actor/Milk’s long time friend Shaun White announced that the famous Air + Style snowboarding event will meet the hot Pasadena sun for the first time.

The groundbreaker is used to a little challenge (this is, after all, the man who boasts 15 X Games gold medals and two Olympic gold medals, amongst his other accolades) and something as menial as weather is no concern, especially when collaborating with Chris “Gunny” Gunnarson of Snow Park Technologies to build the ramp in the legendary Rose Bowl. "We’ve worked on Big Air scaffolding jumps in even tougher conditions, so this is nothing," Gunnarson told ESPN. "We’ve got a big crew coming to run huge blocks through a massive ice chipping machine, and the riding surface will be almost like shaved ice you’d want to eat, with a snow-like consistency even in temperatures up to 91 degrees."

Joining White at the press conference were Mark McMorris (a Burton Snowboards teammate), and Slopestyle gold medalist skiers Joss Christensen and Bobby Brown, who helped announce that the Air + Style would incorporate skiers for the first time. “I was sitting down with a lot of the founding members of Air & Style and they were like, ‘We’ve got a strict rule that there’s no skiing in the event," White said. "It just seemed so funny to me because when snowboarding got started it was the other way around and we had to fight our way in. Now that we own events, I’m proud to be bridging the gap and bringing skiers in.”

The event will be held from February 21st – 22nd and caters to all types of people, making it the must-go-to event for the upcoming year. Not a snowboarder? Try the skating area. Not a skater? Enjoy the live music courtesy of Phantogram and White’s band Bad Things. Not a music fan? Well then there is no pleasing you.
