Jeff Koons makes art with Birkin bags
As if Hermès Birkin bags weren’t already a hot commodity, several formidable folks like Diane Von Furstenberg, Marc Jacobs, Marie-Josée Kravis, and Sofia Coppola have parted with their own Birkins to be auctioned off for Project Perpetual, a privately funded charity founded by Svetlana Kuzmicheva-Uspenskaya, Paris-based art collector and philanthropist. The donated bags have also been revamped into one-of-a-kind creations by none other than revered artist Jeff Koons.
Project Perpetual connects with contemporary artists to raise awareness and funds for high-risk children. This one benefits [email protected], a United Nations Foundation’s campaign that advocates for worldwide vaccination. Koons’s pieces usually sell for millions, so the auction is bound to generate a lot of proceeds. Not only did the New York artist put his own spin on the donated bags, he even created an addition his Gazing Ball Series (which of course features two Birkin bags).
The nine works, including La Charité (pictured), will be unveiled and auctioned off at the Four Seasons restaurant in New York on November 9.
