Julian Assange + Pussy Riot for Whistle Blowers
The milennium’s queens of punk rock and definition riot grrrls Pussy Riot have just expanded their horizons in a big way, global intrigue and espionage big. The girls have teamed up with none other than the master of intrigue himself, Julian Assange.
No, Julian will not be a featured vocalist on a new track. Quite the opposite, the girls have declared support for the Courage Foundation, of which Assange is on the board of trustees. The Courage Foundation was established as an aid and safe haven for those being persecuted for releasing confidential government documents, such as Assange himself and other whistleblowers still held in purgatorial positions like Edward Snowden. After meeting Assange at the Eucadorian embassy in London (where he is still laying low) it was established that two members of Pussy Riot, Nadezhda Tolokonnikov and Mria Alyokhina, will sit on the advisory board for the organization.
The media was quick to ask the ladies how women who held feminist ideals in such high esteem could associate with Assange, who is facing charges of sexual assault in Sweden. “We had more in common than we expected” the girls told the Guardian, and that they chose to focus solely on Assange’s future, for which they seem to share a great deal of common ground. The foundation recently held a benefit that saw the likes of M.I.A. and Vivienne Westwood joining in on the fun of political amnesty. Now that Pussy Riot’s in, we’re thinking we’ll have a punk-fabulous Justice League on our hands.
