Keith Haring's NSFW Mural to Reopen in 2015
The great late Keith Haring is one of the most well known artists of the 20th century, creating iconic works like the ‘Crack is Wack’ mural in Harlem, subway designs, and a plethora of work dedicated to the awareness of AIDS. One of the lesser known works dedicated to the cause is a mural he made at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community Center in 1989, six months before his untimely death.
The mural, titled Once Upon a Time displays a super awesome graphic series of penises (peni?) in different forms, and although it’s a little different than Haring’s dogs, his style is unmistakable, with a sense of humor that only few can master (a penis with legs? Hilarious). The intention was to share a sex-positive acceptance message, and before its opening to the public in 2012 the bathroom was actually used as a meeting area for the LGBT Center since 2001.
It’s hard to imagine taking meeting notes while sitting on top of a closed toilet, which might be why they made the transition to turn it into a public space. And hey we’re not complaining. While it won’t reopen again until 2015 (it’s undergoing restorations), we’re pretty excited at the idea that soon we’ll have better bathroom material to look at than sharpie graffiti sharing sketchy phone numbers.
