Trans People Banned From Driving in Russia
Always the prime example of what NOT to do, Russia has banned transgender and transsexual people from driving since, according to the government, they suffer from “mental disorders.” The Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev signed the decree in late December with the aim to diminish road accidents, targeting “those with gender identity disorders, disorders of sexual preference and psychological and behavioral disorders associated with sexual development and orientation.”
This means that people with fetishes, exhibitionists, and voyeurs are also part of the mandate and are forbidden from getting behind the wheel. Russia’s oppressions on the LGBT community are nothing new, but the restrictions they keep putting on civilians are. They are subjected to violence and now they can’t even have the freedom to get away by their own means. While the government is trying to use the justification of safety on the roads from those suffering of mental disorders as the reason to enact on this decree, one thing is crystal clear to us: the only evidence of any sort of mental incapacity is stripping humans of their rights to publicly be who they are.
