Top 5 Missy Elliott Moments to Get Ur Freak On
In the 90s, the forefront female rap artists weren’t recognized solely for their talent as they were for their hyper-sexualized, size zero aesthetic. That was until Missy ‘Misdemeanor’ Elliott burst onto the rap scene with out-of-left-field creative talent and "IDGAF" fashion style. The extra-glossy lip pouting, Adidas sweatsuit wearing, sideways-visor sporting, rap artist introduced a whole new brand of woman power to the music industry. Now, after almost a whole decade without any new Missy material, rumors have it that she will be joining Katy Perry on stage for her Superbowl XLIX halftime performance, along with Lenny Kravitz. The timing is just right for Missy to pull a Beyonce and drop a surprise album to end this decade long drought. We’re keeping our fingers crossed, but for now, here’s a list of our favorite Missy moments:
After debuting her first album, Supa Dupa Fly, Missy Elliott released the breakout music video “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)”, the first of what would be multiple unusually eccentric videos that left us baffled, intrigued, and totally into her. Directed by Hype Williams, Elliott raps into a fisheye lens and gets sensual with herself — all the while wearing an inflated trash bag. This would be the initial I wear what I want, I do what I want statement of her musical career.
Is it worth it? Lemme Work it
Try putting this song on in a venue and not have a crowd bust out with these lyrics. Perhaps the most successful single of her whole career, Missy raps “Is it worth it? Lemme work it. Put my thang down flip it and reverse it.” By then she had already cemented her name in the music industry with the 2002 album Under Construction. In yet another bizarre music video, Missy raps as bumble bees swarm all over her face, rises from the ground in an abandoned playground, and spins on her furry-flat-cap wearing head. (She is consistently the biggest G in the room.) This video not only showcased her immense weight loss, but was an ultimate tribute to deceased artist Aaliyah.
We were used to seeing the booshiest of booshy celebrity pads on MTV Cribs, but when we took a tour or Missy Elliott’s mansion, we really got a sense of her career success. Custom Lamborghini furniture, fish tanks for arm-rests on reclining chairs, and shall we not forget: a custom-made king size Ferrari bed with a plasma screen under the hood and a personal shoe closet in the trunk. Bringing dope to a whole other level.
Mocha Choca-lata yaya, Creole Lady Marmalade
Not only did Missy co-produce the remake of Lady Marmalade for the 2001 musical dramady, Moulin Rouge, she appeared in the video too. The velvet and diamond wearing master of ceremony, Missy introduces Christina Aguilera, P!nk, Maya and Lil’ Kim as they sing and rap their hearts out in the sexiest video of 2001.
Missy X Wang X H&M
When Alexander Wang launched his activewear inspired H&M collection last fall, it was the after-party that got people talking. With Diplo on the turntables, Missy Elliott blasted down her own runway and performed our favorite jams: “Get Ur Freak On,” “Work It,” and “Lose Control". The performance even got Wang dancing onstage.
With that, we’re crossing our fingers for more Missy.
