Talking Tire Treads at Jonathan Simkhai FW15
What do you get when you mix NASCAR, coral reefs, crackled glass, and fembots? Well when it’s in the hands of Jonathan Simkhai, you get delicately energetic pieces. Simkhai’s first runway collection was inspired by cars and the appeal of fearless empowered women, which was evident with the garments that stomped down the runway. With 32 looks, Simkhai showed us what a craftsman he really is, adorning every piece with a different abstract embellishment reminiscent of tire treads, coral reefs, and shards of glass, making evident that the Simkhai woman is a powerful as she is beautiful. Milk Made spoke to Jonathan after the presentation to hear about these abstractions of pattern in his own words.
So let’s talk about the inspiration behind some of the patterns, what informed that variety?
It was about fierceness, channeling adrenaline. I thought about racecar driving and the culture that comes with that. Like tire marks, and treading, metallics, different kinds of oil, and all of that emerged in the fabric.
Did that concept inform the way that the fabric would organically flow between different pieces of the same outfit?
Yeah, that’s a really a nice way of looking at it. We really wanted to push fabric development in this collection and have this season focus on the customization of that development. We wanted to have fabrics that were exclusive to our brand in order for those to really stand out.
Is there a unifying factor to this collection?
It’s about the girl, I think. I wanted to cover her from all angles; daytime, evening, red carpet, events, galas, work, casual; I wanted to give her the full spectrum. And that was one of the other main focus points I concentrated on.
Who would the Simkhai woman be? Does she exist yet?
She does exist, and I think the ultimate Simkhai woman is my mom. I’ll occasionally dress her, and she loves it. And my friends. I like to dress the people that I love and the ones that are close to me. I can cater to them more, and maximize the effect of their outfit and even push them in a way.
