Scarlett Johansson is Now a New Wave Rockstar
Wait, what? Fresh off of two of her best performances to date (the phenomenal voiceover role in Her and her star turn in last year’s Under the Skin Scarlett Johansson has decided to celebrate by forming a band called The Singles and releasing a flawless track of new wave pop. And to cement the seriousness of this move, she’s recruited Este Haim of the pop rock sister group, you guessed it, Haim as a member of the band.
Johansson said in a press release that the goal of this project was pretty simple, “the idea was to write super-pop dance music written and performed by girls. I love Grimes, I love The Bangles, and I love The Go-Go’s, I wanted it to be like those bands.” And sure enough, the influence of all three of those groups is present in the single she dropped earlier today; an infectious little banger called ‘Candy.’
Melding the synth-projected dance rock of classic 80’s melodies with the lyrical sensibilities of millennial indie pop, ‘Candy’ is honestly a bit of a surprise. Johansson has dabbled in music in the past, but this new announcement of The Singles seems a more serious plunge into defining herself as a musician entirely separate from her work a supremely talented actor. No word yet on any more singles or an eventual album, but here’s hoping. The idea of going to a concert to stand front row to see Scarlett Johansson sing is just too enticing.
