Major Lazer: The Cartoon Coming to Screens Near You
It’s almost a universally accepted fact that we’re living in the Golden Age of Television, a time where shows made by an online shopping retailer about trans awareness can go on to win a Golden Globe. With the rules being so rapidly rewritten, it should be no surprise that wilder and wilder concepts will continue to make it to a screen near you. Case in point: the upcoming cartoon from master electronic producer Diplo’s high-octane dance outfit Major Lazer.
It’s a project that has been a longtime in the making, over 5 years according to Diplo in an interview with Billboard, but the premiere date for the Major Lazer cartoon show has just been set for April 16th at midnight on FXX. And if the teasers are any indication, it’s a program that will be just as high-strung, frenetic, and insanely fun as the music that Major Lazer has come to embody. In a sneak peek video on the making of the show, Diplo detailed how the initial influences of the band have gone on to influence the show, where Jamaican rasta culture and is translated into the world of retro 80’s cartoons.
But Diplo is far from alone in the realization of this vision. It’s been confirmed that the show will feature the voice talents of an incredibly diverse group, with acting chops provided by the recent Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons, comedic timing from the likes of Andy Samberg and Aziz Ansari, and crossovers from the music world with Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig, Charli XCX, and perhaps most amazingly, RiFF-RAFF.
Exact details of the show’s plot are murky, but what we do know is that it involves a superhero/DJ who goes by the name Major Lazer and lives in a post-apocalyptic Jamaica, a land filled with actual laser guns and copious, copious amounts of twerking. There aren’t too many other shows out there that blend sci-fi action adventure with traphouse dance and smoking ganja, but if Diplo’s skills as a television producer are anywhere near as adept as his work as a music producer, then the world is in for quite an animated treat.
