Happy birthday Dame Vivienne Westwood! The legendary designer turns 74 today and in order to celebrate we look back at five reasons why she’s the baddest veteran in the fashion world. Click here and read on.

She Parodied Margaret Thatcher

On April 1989 Tatler Magazine got a very special cover star: Vivienne Westwood herself. However the famous redhead wasn’t dressed in her usual garments and eccentric makeup, but as then Prime Minister of the U.K. Margaret Thatcher. Not only does Westwood look exactly like the controversial Iron Lady but she’s also wearing a suit that was ordered by Thatcher but hadn’t been delivered yet. The collage headline reads “This Woman Was Once a Punk,” but perhaps the best subtlety on the cover is the date, which reads “April’s fool.” Like rust to iron.

Odd fun fact: today not only marks Westwood’s d.o.b but it’s also Thatcher’s d.o.d. Spoooky

She Posed Nude for Juergen Teller

Juergen Teller has photographed many a nude model, including Lara Stone and himself, but perhaps the most amazing photos are the ones he took of Dame Vivienne herself. Westwood poses completely bare on a floral couch and proves two things:
1.Age is just a number
2.The designer is a natural redhead

She Knows How to Cast Models

While most of the fashion world adheres to the typical tall/thin model prototype, Westwood’s muse pickings have proved why she’s the punk rebel of the industry. Notable models that have walked for Westwood include Alice Dellal, Alexa Chung, and Daisy Lowe, while Naomi Campbell famously fell walking down the Brit designer’s fashion show. However the best Westwood muse/model is hands down Pamela Anderson, who not only modeled three looks during the 2009 F/W show but was also the star of the collection’s Juergen Teller shot campaign alongside the designer and her much younger partner Andreas Kronthaler.

She Got Her Feet Wet for PETA

Westwood is a notorious activist, advocating for socio political issues as well as environmental issues. She’s featured challenging slogans on her clothes and her runway shows, as well as writing a manifesto titled Active Resistance to Propaganda, which deals with human predicaments and talks about our responsibility to climate change.

The designer, who’s a famous vegetarian, also starred in a video for PETA. In the video Westwood takes a shower while saying, “I am an eco-warrior, but I take long showers with a clean conscience because I’m vegetarian… By avoiding meat, you do more for the environment than recycling or driving a hybrid car combined.” The video explains the impact that the meat industry has on the environment, particularly on the fact that to produce one pound of meat you would need about six months worth of showers. Yeesh.

She’s the Ultimate Punk Queen

Westwood isn’t only a staple of punk fashion, she’s actually one of the pioneers of the genre. Along with former partner Malcolm McLaren, who was the manager of the Sex Pistols, the Brits opened the legendary 430 King’s Road boutique [World’s Ends], formerly known as Let It Rock, Seditionaries, Too Fast To Live Too Young To Die, and Sex. The store sold Westwood’s first designs which were punk emblems: safety pinned and tartan clothes inspired by bikers, fetishists, and prostitutes.

Since then Westwood has made the fashion world her playground, parodying everything from elitism, politics, and other social injustices. Dame Viv is not only a legendary designer, but she’ll always be the queen of tartan, pencil brows, and anarchy in the U.K.
