Rihanna Unveils Politically Charged Video

Queen Riri talks that talk (yes, the political one) in her new video, ‘American Oxygen.’
Directed by Darren Craig, it was originally a Tidal exclusive but has now been officially released on Vevo.

The video features Rih in a black leather jacket, rep lips and nails to match swaying in front of an American flag with superimpositions of historical footage. Starting off with a clip of Obama’s inauguration, we’re shown images from 9/11, Ferguson protests, the civil rights movement, and montages of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s funeral service intercut with Beatlemania.

In a discussion with Billboard, the song’s co-writer, Sam Harris revealed that he was inspired by Bruce Springsteen’s 1984 ‘Born in the USA’ and intends to call the nation’s attention to political issues in a similar way.

We’re excited to see pop artists create artistry surrounding often avoided themes. Even if it’s in a pop format like a music video. Here’s to more pop following suit!
