Crystal Castles Not Dead, Share New Track 'Frail'
We had previously reported this past fall that electronic duo extraordinaire Crystal Castles were no more, based on an announcement by front-woman Alice Glass of her immediate departure from the band to move onto solo projects. We have most fortunately been proven wrong, as remaining band member Ethan Kath has freshly dropped a brand new track.
The song, titled Frail, is quintessential Crystal Castles, walking the line between catchy synth-drizzled melody and colossally unsettling noise rock. Despite the departure of Glass, a new female vocalist is present on the track, retaining nearly the exact same sound that has come to identify them at the forefront of the electronic music scene.
However, the track premiere did not come without its fair share of drama. Kath, clearly ready to dispel any notions of the band’s end with Glass’s exit, originally posted the song to Soundcloud with an extremely passive caption. In it, he wishes his “former vocalist the best of luck in her future endeavors,” but goes on to point out that “she didn’t appear on Crystal Castles’ best known songs…people often gave her credit for my lyrics and that was fine, I didn’t care.”
Though the caption has since been removed, it caught the attention of Glass, who fired back on Twitter. “Manipulative statements about my contributions to the band only reinforce the decision I made to move on to other things,” claiming credit for the majority of the lyrics in the band’s tenure, as well as promising new music soon.
Band fights are never a pretty occurrence, but we find it to be a blessed alternative to no Crystal Castles at all. Indeed, we may now have two warring factions of the band, each fighting the other with rivaling electronic perfection. Let the games begin.
