Prince Rallies 4 Baltimore with New Song
The city of Baltimore has gone through a lot the past few weeks. Between protesting Freddie Gray’s death in police custody and the unfair media representation, the people of Baltimore can’t seem to get a break. However, the king of all that is sensuous and purple, Prince is stepping in to help the community. A spokesperson of his chatted with Billboard last week, announcing that Prince has penned a political ballad for Freddie Gray and all the young black men harmed in police custody aptly named “Baltimore”. The track will be played at Prince’s Rally 4 Peace that will be held this Sunday at Royal Farms Arena.
Live Nation sent a press release to the NY Times stating, “In a spirit of healing, the event is meant to be a catalyst for pause and reflection following the outpouring of violence that has gripped Baltimore and areas throughout the U.S. As a symbolic message of our shared humanity and love for one another, attendees are invited to wear something gray in tribute to all those recently lost in the violence.” Tickets went on sale yesterday and a portion of all sales will be sent to youth charities in Baltimore. Prince has intentions of streaming it on Tidal, but has already released the lyrics, the most poignant being “DOES ANYBODY HEAR US PRAY?/4 MICHAEL BROWN OR FREDDIE GRAY PEACE IS MORE THAN THE ABSENCE OF WAR/ABSENCE OF WAR”
The public outcry for justice is evident and elevated by big names like Prince backing it through their artistry. Prince is not the only one helping the cause. The Game, Joey Bada$$ and even Beyonce have shown their support. Our prayers are still going out to Baltimore and all that have been affected by police brutality. Hopefully celebrity voices like Prince’s can help bring attention to the need for reform and really make a difference.
