Go Buy Warhol's Polaroids Before It's Too Late
The selfie has been booming since camera phones started popping up in the early 2000s. Since then, Oxford dictionary named it Word of the Year in 2013, and Kim K has even published her Selfish book this year. The seflie’s reach has come far and wide. However, we all know the selfie came way before any of that in the form of OG selfie royalty Andy Warhol. Thanks to Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Day Auction, hosted by eBay, some of Warhol’s self portraits (in and out of drag), as well as a set of celeb portraits, have been released to the public.
The auction went live today at 9 AM, and is still continuing at the publish of this piece. Unfortunately, the series of six portraits of a pale faced, rouge lipped Warhol have already been sold for a whopping $220,000 (Sotheby estimated $90,000 for the set of six polaroids), but that’s not stopping us from gazing at some of the legends fiercest looks. Another set of four images of Warhol’s big name crew, which includes, Liza Minnelli, Diana Ross, and Mick Jagger’s exes Jerry Hall and Bianca Jagger sold for $45,000.
To us, an intimate look at the illustrious Andy Warhol is priceless, but as the king of Studio 54 has said himself, “If you want to know about Andy Warhol, then just look at the surface of my pictures, my movies and me and there I am; there’s nothing in between.” Well Andy, we’re just grateful to get another look at your artistic reach.
