Start your week with further evidence that Mr. and Mrs. Carter can do no wrong. Social activist and author, dream hampton, recently posted a series of tweets claiming that power couple Beyonce and Jay-Z had quietly donated thousands of dollars to bail out jailed Baltimore protesters.
hampton, who worked with Jay-Z on his memoir Decoded, also revealed that the pair had donated to Ferguson protesters in 2014 after the murder of Michael Brown. She was quick to state how the couple contributed privately, preferring to keep their political activity out of the spotlight. hampton soon deleted the tweets after receiving a “shut the f*k up & head to brunch” text from an undisclosed source – possibly Jay-Z himself. Complex posted screenshots of the tweets which can be seen here.
Beyonce and Jay-Z, whose music streaming service Tidal has struggled to build momentum since its launch last month, have faced some criticism for their lack of involvement in the #BlackLivesMatter movement. However, the Grammy award-winning couple were photographed with the family of Freddie Gray at Prince’s “Rally 4 Peace” benefit concert. Tidal streamed the performance for free and promised to match all donations made. Bless.
The Drunk in Love duo have yet to comment on their financial contributions to the Baltimore protests. It’s important to realize that the #BlackLivesMatter movement isn’t about donations from the 1%, but “resilience in the face of deadly oppression.” The desire for anonymity shows that Beyonce and Jay-Z understand this and are using their platform to participate without taking focus away from the bigger issue.
