Have yourself a Murray little Christmas
What do you get when you combine Bill Murray, Sofia Coppola, and Christmas carols? Something cynically cheerful, of course. This holiday season promises A Very Murray Christmas; a new holiday special reuniting Murray with director Sofia Coppola since their Oscar-winning collaboration in Lost in Translation. Coppola and Murray will also team with Mitch Glazer, and executive producers Roman Coppola and Tony Hernandez.
In the newly released 24-second teaser, Murray sports an antler headband and a shruggish attitude as he looks out of a Carlyle hotel window to the city skyline. The jazz soundtrack and city scope are reminiscent of the charm in Coppola’s Tokyo dramedy.
Though details remain under wraps, it is definite that the project will feature Murray with a whole lot of timeless Christmas carols. “We’re going to do it like a little movie. It won’t have a format but it’s going to have music," the comedic legend says. Murray plays himself in the special, fretful of the chance that no one shows up to his TV show due to a snowstorm hitting New York City. The plotline follows a soulful progression as guests arrive at the Carlyle hotel, dancing and singing in the holiday spirit.
The stars of the show read like our dream holiday party guest list, including George Clooney, Paul Shaffer, Amy Poehler, Michael Cera, Chris Rock, Maya Roudolph, Rashida Jones, Miley Cyrus, Phoenix and more.
This homage to the classic variety show is set to hit Netflix in December, coming right into the holiday season. He’s made us laugh on countless Saturday nights and stole our hearts in Groundhog Day– there’s no doubt it won’t be a very Murray Christmas.
