Grimes, HBA & Binx Slayed at the CFDA Last Night
Some describe the CFDA Awards as the Oscars of the fashion world, but we like to think of it as more of a Prom Night. This year’s ceremony, hosted by the new prince of late night television James Corden, proclaimed insurgent designer and rule breaker/maker Shayne Oliver of Hood by Air as this year’s MVP of the fashion world.
The Made alumni, who walked away with the Swarovski Award for Menswear, decked the laws of formality when he arrived in blacked out HBA gear alongside Binx, who fearlessly rocked a deconstructed dress, clunky boots and a thick choker. They were serving future prison realness on a platter, proving that if the label channels anything, it’s forward-thinking.
Other winners at the ceremony include Tom Ford for Menswear Designer of the Year and Betsey Johnson (who busted into splits and cartwheels on stage) for the Lifetime Achievement Award. The Olsens’ label The Row scored the twins a Womenswear Designer of the Year award, and weirdly enough, Instagram even garnered attention when they were given the media award.
But it wasn’t just the labels that were dressed to kill, like any other award ceremony, the CFDA’s are a chance for the guests to arrive decked out in opulence. Kim Kardashian’s outfit, a custom-made Proenza Schouler sheer gown embellished in grommets, was so hot that it quite literally burst into flames at the end of the evening. Kim wasn’t the only one rocking Proenza, as musician/wood nymph Grimes also turned it out in the label’s innovative textiles. Other stunners of the night included blue-leather jacket wearing Pharrell, who took home the award for Fashion Icon and Gigi Hadid who slayed everything in a bronze Michael Kors jumpsuit.
If we’ve learned anything from this year’s CFDA awards, it’s that environmentalists don’t think Ralph Lauren is as cool as Kanye West does and that fashion is only as forward as our appreciation of it. Cheers to this year’s winners!
