Skulls & Smiles from the Murakami x Vans Collection
Stop, put your sandals away. Your go-to summer shoe will be from the lovechild collection of Takashi Murakami and Vault by Vans. Murakami, who’s been a longtime wearer of Vans, stated in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar a few years back that 95% of all the shoes he’s worn were Vans and he’d love to work with them. Now, the dream is real.
The collab will include his favorite silhouette, the Classic Slip-On, in both adult and toddler sizes along with skateboard decks and t-shirts. The Japanese artist is known for his ’Superflat’ aesthetic, blending high art with more accessible pop culture iconography. The result is his signature look: bubbly skulls, insanely happy flowers, and super-wide smiles which are all featured in the line along with a special appearance by his beloved pup, Pom.
The adult footwear capsule includes six designs with shades ranging from deep blues to bright yellows. For the days when you don’t feel like accosting the world with color, try the white Vans with gold & silver line art. For the toddlers, Murakami went with a softer approach by only using a singular image, rather than covering the entire shoe with a pattern. The shirts and boards feature eye-popping, anime-inspired graphics. One shirt even includes an illustration of him posing on top of the world, a look which can only be described as ‘Murakami-esque.’ You’ll definitely kill the shoe game with this kaleidoscopic collection.
The Vans x Murakami collection is hitting stores June 27th.
