Skinny Jeans Leave Woman Hospitalized
Skinny jeans are back in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. After being made popular by emo culture back in the MySpace days, this polarizing fashion trend has reached a new level of infamy: earlier this week, an Australian woman had to be cut out of her jeans after losing circulation in her legs.
On the day of the incident, the 35 year old woman had been helping a friend move. She was bending, squatting and lifting heavy objects when she started to lose feeling in her feet. Eventually, her legs went numb and she fell down on her way home (remember ‘fashion roadkill‘ from Sex and the City?). It was 3 hours before she was found by a stranger and brought to the hospital where she was cut out of her jeans.
Doctors diagnosed her with compartment syndrome, which happens when excessive pressure builds up in a specific area of the body. Basically, skinny jeans prevented blood flow through her legs and nearly left her for dead. After 4 days in the hospital, she was able to walk without assistance and is expected to make a full recovery.
This news comes in the wake of another skinny jean attack – although this one was actually deliberate – in California. A man recently plead guilty to assaulting three men from a local band with a knife solely because they were wearing skinny jeans. Local police classified the attack as a hate crime.
Skinny jeans have been criticized by people for years. But wearers should never become hate crime victims or have to get their jeans cut from their body. Maybe not being able to fit into skinny jeans is a blessing after all.
