4/10/17: Your Weekly Activist Events Roundup

Skrrrt. While the climate takes a radical turn toward the right (as in wrong) direction, we continue to fight for government policy to shift left. With that said, we know that it won’t happen on its own, which is why we return week after week, relentless as ever, with a round up of political events, rallies, fundraisers, and general calls to action that you can be a part of. Thursday, April 13: NOW NYC: Women’s Town Hall – Speak Up, Speak Out Against Violence What: Though we are two weeks out of Women’s History Month, the female voice remains prevalent and powerful as ever. The National Organization for Women NYC is continuing its series of Town Hall discussions that speak out against violence towards women. It is of vital importance now, their page claims, “to amplify the voices of survivors and advocates and to document the vital need for the threatened programs of the Violence Against Women Act,” as their basic rights face threat against the current office.

Friday, April 14: TRANSfilmers: More Than Meets The EyeWhat: As part of the 2017 LGBTQ Scholars of Color National Conference, the TRANSfilmers network is featuring six independent films that are devoted to shedding exposure to the commonly untold stories of queer and trans people of color. The films being screened are GaysiansVesselsOya: Something Happened on the Way to South AfricaIt Runs in the FamilyPamanikhan, and Free Cece!. Tickets are available for individual films or for a package of all six.

Saturday, April 15:

Tax March NYC What: Demanding answers from He Who Shall Not Be Named, regarding tax returns and other shady AF activities, Tax March NYC has gathered nearly 14,000 Facebook users to unite alongside one another using speakers, signs and apparently, a giant chicken, in a nationwide movement to put forward the question: #WhatAreYouHiding?

When: 1PM – 4PM

Baby’s Big DiscoWhat: Putting the “fun” in fundraising, Baby Disco and Brooklyn’s own Baby’s All Right are hosting a night for you to shake your asses while you shake your wallets into their donation box. Baby’s Big Disco will be contributing proceeds from their $10 ticket sales to the American Civil Liberties Union and hosting a number of musicians and DJs.
