Girl Scouts Return 100k Donation for the Most Incredible Reason

We all know that girls mature faster than boys, and that seems to remain the case even after surviving the trials of a middle school locker room. While the Boy Scouts are just now coming to allow gay members into the organization, the Girl Scouts of Western Washington are laughing at the lack of inclusivity the boys are showing. After receiving an anonymous donation of $100,000, CEO Megan Ferland returned the generous gift for the best reason ever.

The donation, which would cover as much as a quarter of the council’s annual fundraising goal, came with a pretty gross byline. “Please guarantee that our gift will not be used to support transgender girls. If you can’t please return the money.” While the money was enough to send 500 girls to camp, Ferland returned it without another thought. She stated, “Girl Scouts is for every girl. And every girl should have the opportunity to be a Girl Scout if she wants to.” A bittersweet victory, but a victory still.

However, it didn’t stay bittersweet for long. Ferland got the idea to set up an Indiegogo campaign looking to replace the $100k. In two days, the Girl Scout troop has raised almost $300,000, nearly 300% of its original goal. The campaign, titled #ForEVERYGirl, has raised enough money to send 1,250 girls to camp now. Ferland set up a Tumblr and Facebook to allow people to share their stories. One contributor wrote, “I earned Eagle Scout thirty-five years ago when I couldn’t tell anyone I was a girl. Now I am transitioning, and helping other girls have a chance to be themselves from the start!” Who runs the world? Girls, and not just some, but EVERY girl that wants to.

There are still 28 days left to donate and send a girl to camp. Click here
