Finally! South Carolina takes down Confederate Flag

Since the tragic Charleston shooting that happened last month, Americans have expressed their frustrations with the racially charged emblem of the Confederate South. Despite the fact that the ‘Blood Stained Banner’ uses the same red, white, and blue, the values that the flag embodies directly oppose what America should be all about. Last week, Charlotte activist Bree Newsome went so far as to climb a 30 foot flagpole outside the South Carolina State House and removed the flag herself. However, her arrest was not in vain, for this morning, less than 24 hours after the South Carolina House voted on the decision to remove it, the flag has been permenently taken down.

President Obama praised the decision, tweeting: "South Carolina taking down the confederate flag – a signal of good will and healing, and a meaningful step towards a better future.”

This morning, hundreds gathered in Columbia, the SC capital, to witness this historic event, one of which was former state representative Bakari Sellers, who exclaimed, "Finally we can breathe, we can sigh, we can cheer.”

It’s a relief to see our nation recognize that racist iconology, like the Confederate flag, has no place at hanging from a capital building, let alone anywhere else in the United States. #takeitdown, #keepitdown.
