Alexander Wang Enlists Alice Glass for Goth Girl Gang
In the grungy world created by Alexander Wang this season, goth vampire chic is the new black. Of course, black and Wang are synonymous at this point, but it’s the newly circulating print ad featuring a pack of vampire youth led by former Crystal Castles frontwoman Alice Glass staring hungrily at the camera that really cements his status as a goth lord. After staging a runway show that featured creeper-clad models stomping through a pitch-black tunnel, it was clear that the designer’s new direction was evolving out of athleisure and into the angst-fueled rebellious youth phase you had as a teenager.
Wang’s goth army is strong for his new print campaign with the addition of hardcore-queen Glass and Japanese dance duo AyaBambi, who just starred alongside Wang in Madonna’s Bitch I’m Madonna video. Shot in black and white by Steven Klein and styled by Karl Templer with creative direction by Pascal Dangin of KiDS Creative, the shoot took over Sunset Park Brooklyn with a brick and cement set that paired perfectly with the piercing glares and stoic black garments. Glass and AyaBambi mesh well with Wang’s gang of brooding models—including Anna Ewers, Molly Bair, Binx Walton, Lexi Boling, Hanne Gaby Odiele, Sarah Brannon and Isabella Emmack. Together they are a pack of bad girls as ready to mug you as they are to walk to runway, which is exactly what the designer wants.
"They all are such individuals yet they all fit the characters of this collection seamlessly,” Wang explained. “Part of youth culture relates back to tribes and groups, and a sentiment of feeling collectively different; to feel both a sense of defiance, and of belonging,”
Wang has always been a staple of street style and a master of grit, but this season he has crafted the tough girl gang you’ve always dreamt about joining but were too scared to. This is Wang’s World and it’s a twisted place.
