4/17/17: Your Weekly Activist Events Roundup

Happy Monday! Open up that Google calendar in a new tab people; we’re back this week with a list of activist events for you to partake in. Because we know many may find it hard to put aside time within your busy schedules to actually attend some of the events we set forth, we’re including daily political actions to our roundup as well. Never before has standing in solidarity been so easy (and immobile)! With just a click of a button and the dispatch of a text, you can demand your own rights while sitting in your office chair, riding the subway, or laying on the couch. We, in conjunction with Alex Israel’s political newsletter Action Items, bring to you a roundup of this week’s activist actions and events. Subscribe to her newsletter here.

Daily Action:

Protect the Ballot

Call your Representative and tell him/her to vote against HR 634, which plans to eliminate the Election Assistance Commission, which has been a fixture in elections since 2000, aimed to ensure that all elections are fair and transparent.  Call your Representative at (844) 241-1141.

Thursday, April 20:

Artists Rise Up

What: An event on 4/20 that has nothing to do with weed? Worth it. Artists Rise Up serves as both a celebration of all forms of art and self expression, and as a calling out to Trump’s plans to remove funding from programs such as PBS and arts offered in public schools.

When: 4:20PM

Where: Lincoln Center, 10 Lincoln Center Plaza, New York, NY 10023

The Broad Room Party

What: The Broad Room is a collective group of activist women based in New York City that strives to foster an environment for different intersections of feminism to come together in their mission to advance to the progressive light at the end of the political tunnel. The group’s launch party will be held in the Lower East Side and boasts “drinks, snacks, music, and amazing speakers” in addition to a network of amazing, politically active girl bosses.

When: 7:00PM – 9:00PM

Saturday, April 22:

March for Science NYC

What: Appropriately set on Earth Day, March for Science NYC has organized a rally in Central Park, followed by a march down Broadway, all in the name of science. The New York based nonprofit aims to focus the event as a parade-like celebration that will build a bridge (NOT a wall) between both scientific and nonscientific communities, so should you be in a festive mood on Saturday and enjoy the fruits of scientific discovery, we know where you’ll be this weekend.

When: 10:30AM – 4:00PM

Where: 64th & Central Park West, New York, NY 10023

Protest Against Torture & Murders of Gay Men in Chechnya, Russia

What: Due to the series of extremely unfortunate events that have been taking place in Russia, the Russian-Speaking American LGBT Association and OutRight Action International have organized a protest against the gay-targeted mass violence that has transpired in Chechnya, Russia, including torture, abductions and murders. The Russian government has been accused of turning its back on acknowledging these brutal actions, so this protest is aimed at calling upon the investigations of said crimes.

When: 3PM – 5PM

Where: Russian Consulate, 9 E 91st Street, New York, NY 10128
