Alexander Wang Officially Exits Balenciaga
Some designers are destined to devote their lives to a single house, others…not so much. Alexander Wang, fashion juggernaut that he is, belongs to the latter category. After many whispers regarding an exit from his role as creative director of Balenciaga, news came this morning of Wang’s official departure from the storied house.
The rumor mill surrounding the fate of Wang at Balenciaga has been circulating for the majority of the summer, fueled in earnest after a recent revival bid to support his eponymous label. It became clear that Wang was putting the focus back on his own label when an ambiguous statement surfaced from Kering, Balenciaga’s holding company, that referenced “discussions between the designer and Balenciaga regarding the renewal of the contract.” Seemingly, this discussion ended in a failure to renew said contract.
Though Wang has only been at Balenciaga for just under three years, this year marks the tenth anniversary of his own label, reassuring any doubt that the designer will be less than busy. His final collection for the revered label, SS16, will be shown in September, a far more sentimental season than could have been planned previously.
Despite mixed reviews of his tenure at Balenciaga, Wang will leave knowing he left his iconic stamp on the label. Who else could have brought the likes of Alice Glass into a century old house? For now, the search is on for the next head of Balenciaga, and Wang will continue to unleash his signature sleekness unto the world.
