Female Viagra Might Not Work, Surprise!

When it’s time to get down with your boo and you just aren’t into it, what do you do? There aren’t a lot of options for females out there, but a new pill is being introduced that’ll supposedly do the trick. Addyi, known in the hip medical scene as the new “female viagra,” has recently been approved by the FDA. But the flibanserin drug isn’t all peach emojis and cream, there’s a couple of issues that are kinda turning us off.

First off, it’s doesn’t actually work like Viagra. It’s meant to heighten libido by adjusting the neurotransmitters in the brain, whereas Viagra focuses on the physical part of arousal. Also, flibanserin was originally produced as an anti-depressant for women suffering from HSDD (Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder). Think of it as a nymphomanical Prozac. But now, it’s being branded as a way for totally healthy women to add a dash of spice to their sex life. Going from prescription to recreational? Pretty big change.

And don’t expect to pop an Addyi right before your scheduled sex session with your longtime boyfriend. According to psychologist and sex therapist, Leonore Tiefer, ”This is not a drug you take an hour before you have sex. You have to take it for weeks and months in order to see any benefit at all.” What’s the point of crazy, spontaneous sex if you have to prepare?

On a much scarier note, the drug has already been rejected twice by the FDA for pretty serious reasons. The side effects—fainting, nausea, dizziness, and low-blood pressure—were deemed too dangerous for regular use. After being denied once, people usually go back to the drawing board. Not many companies try to appeal a bad ruling. But like middle-aged men who can’t get it up anymore, Addyi pushed forward twice until it got a feeble approval.

Female sexuality has always been hard for science to pin down, but maybe meds just aren’t the answer. Pulling a Samantha Jones and taking a pill might not give you that explosive orgasm you expected (sadly Sex and the City remains a fiction). We at Milk prescribe you to sleep with people that give you good vibes, enjoy the whole ride, and do as often as you want.
