We have come to the end of June, otherwise known as Pride Month. Though the parties and parades have ended, the fight for equality and resistance to oppression continue. Pride proves as an example that celebration may act as a form of protest, and this week is no exception with events that you may partake in to practice and celebrate our rights to freedom of expression. “Rise Above” Premiere VR Viewing PartyWhat: Womankind is a non-profit organization based in New York that works with victims of gender-based violence to “rise above trauma and and build a path to healing.” Join them Wednesday evening at their viewing party to premiere the virtual reality short film “Rise Above.” Oculus VR For Good will be supplying VR headsets and headphones. Sunset Cocktail Party Fundraiser Benefitting Second Chance Rescue NYCWhat: This one is a no brainer… Sunset, cocktails, and a cause supporting adorable rescue animals in need of new homes. Join and support Second Chance Rescue NYC on the roof terrace of Hotel on Rivington, featuring a silent art auction, a not-silent DJ set and we repeat, cocktails with a sunset view! Get a little tipsy, but save the animals while you do so.

Queer Animation: A to Z

What: As a last hoorah to Pride Month, celebrate with a selection of short films from five different countries across the globe that shine a light on LGBTQ filmmakers. The event will be hosted at Metropolitan, our favorite gay bar in Brooklyn, by ASIFA East, the Eastern U.S. chapter of the French-based initiative spreading visibility for animated film.
