8-Year-Old Girl Bumped From Soccer Tournament For Looking Like a Boy
You would think that being an eight-year-old female athlete and having short hair couldn’t possibly be considered mutually exclusive, right? Wrong. The badass Mili Hernandez, player for the Azzuri Cachorros girls’ soccer club in Omaha, was kicked off, along with her teammates, from the Springfield Soccer Club girls tournament on Sunday. The reason? The organizers were convinced that Mili is a boy.
Mili’s outraged family showed the tournament organizers her insurance card to prove that she is a girl, but they refused to change their minds, stating that the decision was final.
This happened right after Mili helped bring her team to the tournament’s finals this past weekend. In fact, Mili is the team’s star player, and is so good that she plays on the 11-year-old roster.
Mili’s athletic skills aren’t the only thing beyond her eight years. Despite being shocked and bummed over her team’s nonsensical disqualification, a brave Mili is speaking up for herself. “Just because I look like a boy doesn’t mean I am a boy. They don’t have a reason to kick the whole club out,” she told WOWT 6 News.
As for her playing? Mili isn’t letting another case of fucked up discrimination stop her from pursuing her goals (pun INTENDED). “There’s other tournaments that I can play,” she told WOWT 6 News. Get it, girl.
Check out soccer legend and women’s rights activist Abby Wambach’s response to Mia’s story below.
Dear Mili Hernandez, you are amazing in every way. Thank you for teaching us how to be brave and shining a light on something so hurtful. If you don't know, she is my new hero. Her team was disqualified from a tourney cause they thought she was a boy because of a clerical error that wasn't handled properly. Let's meet soon sister.
