Backstage Beauty Essentials
Models are, by definition, genetically blessed. But that’s not to say a little backstage magic doesn’t go into helping them achieve that flawless look. Romero Jennings, MAC Cosmetics senior artist, sounds off on his secret weapons for attaining runway beauty perfection — show after show, season after season.
1. Matchmaster Foundation
Jennings favors this foundation as it features a special technology that adjusts to almost any skin shade. After fashion week, he’ll use it on celebrity clients stepping out onto the red carpet. “The most important thing is the skin,” says Jennings. “If the skin isn’t right, then it throws everything off. Especially with all of the technology out there, like high definition, those women are under microscopes!”
2.Prep and Prime Beauty Balm
A silky smooth primer first launched in Asia, this must-have goes over moisturizer, under foundation and ensures a long-lasting finish: “If I’m in a rush, I’ll mix it with foundation and moisturizer and keep going from there. I always think about beauty being quick, and giving immediate results.”
3.Prep and Prime Transparent Pressed Finishing Powder
Romero swears by this pressed powder to keep models shine-free, even in high definition lenses. “We use this as a base powder for every skin tone and it’s absolutely great in HD. Many powders have illuminators and brighteners but on hi def, it just reads shiny. A great powder needs to work in all mediums.”
4. Carry All MAC
These classic black kits keep Jennings organized and ready to rock come show day. He’ll often stay up late organizing and labeling his product in advance of fashion week. “A kit needs to be easy, I don’t have time to ruffle through my bag looking for that one thing,” he says. “By the time you find it, the publicist is pulling the girl out of the chair saying, ‘We gotta go.’ When my kit is organized, I have confidence. I know nothing can go wrong today because my kit is clean, labeled and fully stocked.”
5. Half lash curler
MAC’s latest genius invention. This eyelash curler is a demi-version of the classic, designed for those hard-to-reach strands. “It’s incredible. If a girl’s lashes are too short, or a centimeter long, I can get them, grab them and make them look like false lashes. I can get every last one.”
6. False Lashes Mascara
Jennings favorite mascara actually contains a special carbon black ingredient that makes for a darker-than-normal shade.
“This will show up on any girl and it doesn’t dry immediately, so you have time to pick at the lashes to lengthen and thicken them. Whether you do a strong eye or a bold lip, lashes are always so important.”
7. Mineralized Charge Water Moisture Gel
Jennings uses this potion to keep models looking fresh, even after a long night of fittings, shows and the occasional glass of bubbly. MAC’s new mineralized skincare is so lightweight that it “drinks into the skin,” leaving it hydrated but not greasy. “I’ll put it on and immediately see it firming the skin and making it radiate at the same time. It’s amazing.”
8. Pro Longwear Lip Pencil
Secret: not every model has the perfect lip shape. In an effort to even things out, Jennings reaches for this pencil to apply instant color that lasts for hours.
“If I have a problem getting a lip shape right, this pencil will make it look almost pouty. It performs well, and with celebrities you’ll often only get two minutes to give them a perfect red lip.”
