A Hot Minute with Hari Nef
Hari Nef has had an insane year. The 22-year old model, actress, and activist became the first transgender model signed to IMG, and was catapulted even further into the cultural forefront with her breakout role on Transparent. So when we spotted her at Adam Selman’s Fall/Winter ‘16 show at MADE Fashion Week, we were lucky enough to grab a few minutes with the rising star, before being shooed off the runway.
So much has happened over the last year, is there anything that’s been a huge highlight for you?
I think the big ones are obvious—signing a modeling contract with IMG, making my television debut on Transparent, walking for Gucci in Milan just a few weeks ago. I’m so grateful.
You’ve given so many people the strength and encouragement to embrace who they are, it’s really amazing.
You know, on my worst days when I’m feeling lost or discouraged, I just try to think about people whose visibility I might have benefitted from. I don’t have any sense of grandeur about what I’m doing, but if I can help trans visibility or help someone in their own life, that will get me out of bed.
Who has been an inspiration to you?
There are so many amazing people, like Laverne Cox and Janet Mock. I look to them.
What are you looking forward to this fashion week?
Of course, I’m so excited about Adam Selman. He made my dress!
Some like it hot. If that includes you, check out more Hot Minutes.
