About Last Night: Milk Gallery Celebrates Diverse Beauty
Last night the Milk Gallery hosted the opening of Diverse Beauty, a collection of photographs by fashion photographer Alexi Lubomirski whose recent book of the same name—published this year by Damiani—celebrates the undeniable beauty of all women through a series of vivid, sophisticated fashion portraits.
The idea for this project came to Lubomirski while he was shooting actress Lupita Nyong’o. Lubomirski was struck both by her natural beauty and how rarely he’s given the opportunity to photograph diverse women for professional assignments—echoing a familiar critique of the fashion industry as a whole. In response, Lubomirksi conceived Diverse Beauty, a project aimed at embracing and spotlighting all stripes of beauty.
The gallery last night was bustling; guests sipped complimentary wine and cocktails as they took in the lively images lining the gallery walls. Guests included Friends actor David Schwimmer in addition to models Sabina Karlsson, Tasha Poupee, Philomena Kwao, Torraine Futurum, TK Wonder, and Cipriana Quann—all of whom were featured in portraits on display in the exhibition. It was a confluence of fashion professionals and art admirers, all taking selfies and posting them with the hashtag, #IAmDiverseBeauty.
Copies of Diverse Beauty signed by the photographer were available to purchase, for which 100 percent of the proceeds were donated to the humanitarian charity Concern Worldwide, a global organization that works with communities to eradicate poverty, fear, and oppression, and to empower all people to live long, healthy, and prosperous lives with dignity and respect.
Diverse Beauty by Alexi Lubomirski will be on display from November 4th to November 13th in the Milk Gallery. More information can be found here. Learn more about Concern Worldwide by visiting their website here.
