Alexander Wang's Strip Club Extravaganza
In 2005, a 21 year-old Parsons student decided to take the plunge and create his own line, hoping for success. Flash forward ten years, and Alexander Wang is a household name, a superstar – and that’s exactly what his SS16 show last night was all about. Held in the massive Pier 94, the MADE Fashion Week alum’s collection was a revamped ‘best of,’ featuring new looks based off of the brand’s signature pieces: thick pinstripes, bad bitch leathers, lots of mesh, macramé shirts, silk pajama blouses, chain-link jewelry, and oversized denim looks that evoked the effortless cool of street kids from the 90s (bucket hats included).
The collection was a great way of validating what we’ve all known for a while: Wang is a force to be reckoned with. And if there was any doubt left in anyone’s mind, his front row #WANGsquad provided evidence of the power that he holds in the fashion world, with big-league supporters like Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, The Weeknd, Lady Gaga, and Mary J. Blige helping the San Francisco native celebrate. But of course, this being Wang and all, the show was packed with surprises: when it ended, the designer took a celebratory sprint around the runway as confetti rained down on him. The space was opened up to an adjacent room with pole dancers and bottomless drinks, with live performances by Tinashe, Ludacris, and Lil’ Wayne. Wang even printed dollar bills with his face on them, creating his very own Magic City-style strip club. Suffice to say, it got lit. Here’s to the next ten years of Wang.
