An Inside Look At A$AP Rocky And A$AP Bari's New Capsule Collection
It’s easy to find tatted up skaters shredding around halfpipes with music blasting in Los Angeles, but that doesn’t often come with its own fashion show from the A$AP Mob. That’s what greeted a crowd of young artists and streetwear fiends deep in LA’s Fashion District Wednesday night, as A$AP Bari unveiled a 15-look VLONE line, including a few pieces from the VLONE x Off-White capsule collection. While VLONE, a contemporary menswear line, officially launched in March of 2014, this was the label’s US runway debut, as well as the launch of Bari’s collaboration with friend and Off-White designer Virgil Abloh. Between pillars and walls hand-painted by Hi Mum I’m Dead artist Pauly Bonomelli, Bari was joined by fellow Mob member (and fashion killa) A$AP Rocky. In addition to the presentation, Wednesday marked the opening of a VLONE pop-up shop, available through April 30th.
For Bari, reaching out to Abloh to work on the collection together was a natural progression of their friendship, bringing out the best in both designers. “We’ll just talk and come up with crazy ass visions and put them out there. We have a unique vibe and creative chemistry,” he told us. The bleach splashed and spray paint smeared clothes looked ready to go from the runway to the skatepark, which is exactly what VLONE is about.
Like the dudes who posted on the halfpipe as models clutching skateboards walked through the crowd, the brand is more about a lifestyle and attitude than just the garments. “VLONE is for the loners, for the kids who don’t have anybody to help them,” said Bari. “It’s for that creative kid out there who is not being seen or noticed.”
As models hand-picked from the streets of LA walked and skated out to show off the clothing, the space felt more like an ’80s garage party than a standard fashion show. “The vibe was very grimy, very 1985, very California–do your drugs while you’re watching the presentation,” Bari joked afterward. So what are Bari’s expectations for life in the fashion world?
“Just making history.”
VLONE is available exclusively at 801 Mateo Street, Los Angeles, California, from now until April 30th. The shop is open daily from 12 PM to 8 PM.
