Apple joins vogue for 2016 Met Gala, Techies and Fashionistas rejoice
It’s that time of year again: Vogue has announced the theme for Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2016 gala. The mega fashion magazine and Apple will unite for Manus X Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology. The epic gets more epic: Anna Wintour, Taylor Swift, Karl Lagerfeld, Miuccia Prada, Nicolas Ghesquière , Idris Elba, and Apple’s chief designer Jonathan Ive will host the event. The corresponding exhibition will be on view from May 5th to August 14th.
While the theme may seem to lean towards the futuristic, Manus X Machina will focus on technological advances through the ages. An 1880s Worth gown will be on display, which structurally is not all that far from the 3-D printing, thermo-shaping, and laser cutting designs of late. The exhibition will pay homage to inventions like your grandmother’s once-upon-a-time transcendental sewing machine, presumably showing how we got from the first technological revolution to where we are today.
By posing fashion and technology as a dichotomy, the moments where the disciplines have merged will be given the attention that they deserve. It is an important way to not only look at the history of fashion and technology, but our history at large.
While not all of us have the privilege of attending the actual event, there is a lot to hope for. Is a 3-D clad Tay-Tay about to rock out for the guests? Will there be goody bags? What will they contain? Is laser-cut food a thing, and is it actually edible? Only time will tell, but our fingers are crossed for some artistically curated insta-teasers from the designers and techies. We plebes need something to look forward to!
