Awaken Your Inner Force With This New Star Wars Themed Album
If you had told me that hip-hop dad Rick Rubin was going to produce a Star Wars compilation album featuring electronica heavyweights like Flying Lotus, Rustie, and Shlohmo, I’d tell you to take your Jedi mind tricks elsewhere. But here we are, listening to the weirdest Star Wars related jams since “Chinese Bieber” Lu Han dropped his promo video for The Force Awakens. The album, Star Wars Headspace, was released digitally on February 19th, and we’ve been stomping to the beats harder than an AT-AT in ten feet of snow.
This isn’t the John Williams space opera soundtrack your parents grew up on. Instead, this mix draws its inspiration through heavy sampling, with hilarious tracks like “EWOK PUMPP,” “R2 Where R U?,” and “Jabba Flow”—a track co-written by director J. J. Abrams and Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda. This is the soundtrack for a sweaty night at the Mos Eisley Cantina, with scantily-clad Twi’leks dancing onstage and multicolored lightsabers swinging left and right like XXL glow sticks.
Really though, these beats are colder than the carbonite Han Solo got frozen in. Headspace will be available in stores on March 18th—for now, you can listen to the album on Spotify, or stream its tracks on the DisneyMusicVEVO page.
