Bringing Up Baby at Adam Selman
What happens when fashion’s freshest darling/Rihanna’s go-to designer makes his MADE Fashion Week debut? Magic, of course. Not only did the pre-show runway for Adam Selman’s SS16 show serve as a reunion for a medley of familiar faces like Petra Collins, Sky Ferreira, Jeanette Hayes, and Amy Sedaris (to name only a few), but when the lights dimmed and the children’s choir song faded into a more upbeat tempo, the clothes were as bright as the hype in the room.
Selman’s collection was the perfect array of summer outfits, including flowy silk overalls, spaghetti-strap dresses, oversized watercolor print anoraks, and a much-needed update to bell-bottoms (slits and flower embroidery? yes, please). With enviable accessories, including Converse espadrille platforms, flower chokers, and beekeeper like scarf hats, Selman proves that fashion is still as fun as the hot summer day his clothes deserve to live in. In fact by the time the models did the last run-through people actually put down their phones to give Selman the clapping ovation he deserved. Shine bright like Adam Selman.
Amidst post-show craziness, we talked to the designer backstage to know what the driving force behind the collection was, and how he gets his famous mustache to look the way it does:
How are you feeling?
Amazing. It’s so nice to have friends and family support.
Yeah, there’s the coolest crowd here!
All friends, people I know, like “hey girl!”
What are you gonna do to celebrate?
We’re gonna go to dinner. I’ve barely eaten all day, so I’m gonna eat, have a little drink, hang out with some friends. And then I’m gonna go to sleep.
Ooh, what are you gonna eat?
I don’t know yet. Everything. Whatever they put in front of me, I’m gonna eat.
I see the influence of the collection all over your body. What parts of the collection do you feel come from your wardrobe?
I mean, I think a lot of it comes from me, or at least how I wear clothes. I’m not opposed to wearing a dress, but I don’t feel like I’m quite there yet.
I loved the watercolor print. What was that inspired by?
It was sort of inspired by Andy Warhol’s pre-pop work.
This is a bit odd, but it seemed like every collection last season was referencing the ‘90s and Delias. I only mean this as the highest compliment, but this collection actually reminded me of Limited Too!
I can actually see that! I take that as a compliment, I’ll take it.
The last time I interviewed you, everyone wanted me to ask you how you groom your moustache. Any tips?
I just use a pair of cheap scissors! No tricks.
