Broke AF With Shop Blue Dream
Since Lexi Kingery relocated to LA last Fall, we’ve been dying to get a firsthand look at her online vintage store, Shop Blue Dream, which is full of budget-friendly funky pieces. Within minutes of meeting Lexi, we realized her store is truly an offshoot of her own style and personality. Her bubblegum lace tops are reminiscent of her obsession with Sanrio, while her 90s rave pieces fit perfectly into the Chicago club scene. How Lexi styles Victorian slips with Y2K tops is beyond us— that’s why we got her to show you how it’s all done.
How did you come up with the name Shop Blue Dream?
My best friend Liz jokingly told me to name it after my favorite (at the time) weed strain, but Shop Blue Dream actually became super fitting and a beautiful idea with what started out as something funny.
Which decade is your favorite for buying vintage?
Probably the 90s. Love the rave prints that came from that era across the world, especially Japan.
Who are your fashion icons?
Honestly, a lot of my friends— they have a whole lot of talent. You are who you hang out with as they say. Otherwise, anyone in the FRUiTs magazines.
What’s your all-time best thrifting find?
Definitely a vintage Celine suit dress I found back in Chicago at Family Thrift on Cermak. It was probably 2014 and I got it for like $6.
What’s some advice for someone who seeks high-fashion looks on a broke AF budget?
It’s all about how you wear it! Your outfit head-to-toe could cost $12 (mine often are sans some designer pieces I mix in sometimes), but you can make it look polished by styling it interestingly. It’s easy to find items similar to older archival pieces at the thrift, and half the fun of putting together a high-fashion look is the hunt. Keep them guessing!
