Some of the illest outfits we've ever seen.

Celebrate Mary J's New Album With Her 10 Best Style Moments

If you’re into black fashion, specifically when it comes to its intersection with music, you are more than likely familiar with some of the greats who’ve created their own lanes. Mary J. Blige, the Queen of Hip Hop Soul, is one of those cultural icons whose unique sense of fashion stands out in the public’s mind almost as much as her music does. In honor of her latest album, Strength of a Woman, and the release of her collaborative single with DJ Khaled, Missy Elliott, and Quavo, “Glow Up”, we’ve decided to focus on some of her strongest moments in fashion. Below, 10 prime examples of Blige style slayage. Here’s the Queen pouting in a blue-grey short sleeves and pants combo for Rolling Stone in 1993. The best parts might just be the reddish orange hair and her fresh face.Auntie Mary looks like an absolute angel in her lightly colored lingerie (paired with a beautiful beat and some glorious bling) in this screenshot from the “All That I Can Say” music video circa 1999. (Side note: Did you know “All That I Can Say” was written by fellow musical deity Lauryn Hill?). In this shot from the 1993 Soul Train Awards, Mary is glowed all the way up with her blonde ringlets, peach fit, subtle jewelry, and combat boots. This is one of the illest outfits of the last 500 years. Ms. Blige is giving rodeo champion/extraordinarily ethereal garden princess vibes in this image taken by David LaChapelle. The MTV VMA‘s are generally filled to the brim with a variety of daring fashion experiments. Mary stamped her mark on the red carpet for the 1999 award show with Dwayne Wayne style shades, a Versace top, a fur coat, a Chanel necklace, and bright red streaks in her cropped hair.Who can forget the “Real Love” era? Sports jerseys and loose-fitting pants draped over the soul singer’s dainty frame for several of her appearances at the beginning of her solo career. These light brown, Patrice Rushen-inspired braids are one of the lesser-known crowns of R&B’s style chameleon. Here we have shawty rocking all hot-pink while she struts down the runway with Tommy Hilfiger. This is literally the only time we’ll ever cosign a Fedora. The red lip, rings, fur, and tat, make this look a winner. And finally, metallic lingerie, paired with a blonde wig and stunning makeup, takes the cake for our favorite Mary J. look.
