Watch The Trailer For Spike Lee's New Michael Jackson Documentary
King of Pop Michael Jackson is posthumously returning to our screens in Spike Lee’s new documentary, Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off The Wall. The film will follow Jackson’s musical evolution, through archival footage and interviews with an eclectic group of people. The film features Lee Daniels, Pharrell Williams, The Weeknd, Kobe Bryant, Misty Copeland, Mark Ronson, John Legend, Questlove, and L.A. Reid, all recounting how Jackson influenced their lives. The Weeknd is featured the most in the trailer.”I found my falsetto because of Off The Wall,” he said, looking back on Michael’s fifth solo album.
On a different note, Questlove talks about his confusion when hearing “Keep on with the force, don’t stop,” on MJ’s classic song “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough.” Questlove admitted that he thought it was about forks. “When I was a kid,” he said, “I was just like, ‘Keep on with the forks!’ I didn’t know what the forks were.”
The film will debut at Sundance, but will also be featured on Showtime. Although there are several other Michael Jackson documentaries, Showtime claims that this film will answer the question of how Jackson became the King of Pop. Other films, specifically Kenny Ortega’s 2009 feature This is It, depict the star effortlessly singing, moonwalking, and pelvic thrusting his way into stardom, but Lee’s doc will take a different approach, expanding on Jackson’s time as the lead singer of The Jackson 5, and following him through the release of Off the Wall.
So unfortunately, the likelihood of a Bubbles cameo is low. However, the multitalented monkey’s Wikipedia page does note that he was “an occasional actor,” so we’ll see. Regardless, the anticipation for the film is high. Peep the trailer above.
